Abstract
In this work we present a compact RFID system integrating a multilayer anti-counterfeiting tag with holographic elements for enhanced security applications. Owing to the necessity of tackling the problem of counterfeited products, which directly endanger the public's health and safety, we developed a beyond the state-of-the-art multilayer anti-counterfeiting tag with holographic elements patterned on a semi-transparent foil and a specially designed passive RFID structure. The latter is a small logarithmic spiral antenna embedded into a complex multilayer stack and with a total area (occupied by the antenna surface) of only 6 cm × 6 cm. The entire secured RFID tag has been fabricated and experimentally characterized at 915 MHz: the measured reading range exceeds 9 m, which is almost double the value of about 5 m recommended by the manufacturer of the RFID chip. Hence, the proposed RFID system can guarantee long-distance anti-counterfeiting applications with improved security characteristics.
